Karate: Exercise with a Higher Purpose

By Sensei Kevin Kane

It’s in the news every day. The rates of obesity and diabetes in children are skyrocketing while their levels of fitness are plummetting. The draw of the television, computer and gaming devices have combined with the ready availability of high calorie, low nutrition fast food and snacks to turn our youngsters into unhealthy couch potatoes. Our kids need help. If you are looking for something to offer your children that will not only provide a physical benefit, but can also help develop character, confidence and self esteem, consider Karate.

Often parents may be reluctant to explore martial arts with their children because they perceive that it encourages violence. The Buddist Monks are some of the oldest practitioners of martial arts. Their training began from a need for physical fitness, not fighting skill. In fact, kids who learn from USA Karate learn that in Karate, there is no first attack. Karate is truly a form of self defense, not attack.

Studies show that Karate improves general fitness, reflexes, flexibility, co-ordination and agility. The exercises preformed strengthen muscles, build stronger bones, improve cardiovascular fitness, and lower the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure and depression. Long term training has proven to decrease stress, anxiety, and hostility, while it improves sleep habits, concentration and energy levels.

Fitness is only a part of the benefits. Through martial arts you learn that the mental is as important as the physical. With drills and application of self-defense techniques, you learn awareness, concentration, self-disciple, respect, and assertiveness. All of these skills can protect you from an attack or from falling into a hole in the sidewalk. They are also valuable attributes in business.

For those looking for a family activity, Karate is a workout the whole family can share. You find a new form of communication and experiences that belong just to you, creating a common ground to strengthen family relationships. You also create a built in support network to keep you motivated towards achieving your goals.
